What do the Five-year-old-children eat every day?
Long Xiufu (elder brother) and Long Yi (young sister) live in Songtao County, a remote area in Guizhou Province of Southwest China. Their parents have gone to big cities to find works and their grandma has to work in the field. So, they had to cook for themselves. Some leftover fried potato from last night, boiled with some water, would be what they eat.
Potato, rice and soup can fill up their stomach, but the nutrients needs of their growing bodies are far from being met. Long Xiufu, the elder brother, is five years old now but is not yet 1 meter tall. He said his dream is to go to school.
The age of 5 is a critical point in child’s growth that affects a lifetime
Every year, there are 3.1 million children globally who cannot live to the age of 5 because of malnutrition. The age of 5 is a critical point in child’s growth that affects a lifetime. If children do not receive sufficient nutrients during this period of time, their brains and bodies will not develop properly and will be irreversibly and severely damaged.
In China, about 10 million children under five live just like Long Xiufu and his sister and are suffering from physical thinness, shortness and weakness due to economic reasons, family poverty and lack of nutrition awareness. Nutrition poverty deprived them of the fair opportunities to thrive when their lives have barely just begun.
